Cebu is the easiest place in the Philippines to want a guide: the city has Spanish-era streets and a Chinese temple within a jeepney ride of each other, and an hour away there are whale sharks, waterfalls and white-sand islands. Here is what guiding actually costs, so you can budget as a traveler or price yourself as a local.
Typical rates in Cebu
- City walking guide, per hour: ₱300 to ₱600. Colon Street, Magellan's Cross, Fort San Pedro, the Heritage Monument, a Carbon Market food stop, back to your hotel.
- Half day (4 hours): ₱1,500 to ₱2,500 for a city loop or the Temple of Leah and Sirao flower farm on the hills.
- Full day (8 hours): ₱2,500 to ₱4,500. Moalboal sardine run and Kawasan canyoneering, or Oslob and Tumalog Falls. Transport, entrance fees and food are extra unless the guide says otherwise.
- Island hopping day (Mactan, Olango, Pandanon): ₱1,500 to ₱3,000 for the guide, plus the boat, which is usually shared by the group.
Agencies charge more because they bundle a van, a driver and insurance. An independent local charges less because you are paying for one person's time and knowledge, and you handle the rest together.
What you are paying for
A good guide saves you money in the places you cannot see from a booking site: which canyoneering operator is legit, what a tricycle to Moalboal should really cost, which lechon is worth the queue, when the last boat back leaves. They also handle the bits that are hard in Cebuano if you do not speak it. For a solo traveler, the guide is also company, and that is worth something on its own.
How Phriend guides set their rate
On Phriend a Tour Guide Phriend sets an hourly rate on their profile and can list services with their own price, per hour or per session: "Downtown heritage walk, 3 hours, ₱1,200" or "Oslob day trip, per session, ₱3,500, minimum 8 hours". The profile shows the languages they speak, their weekly availability and their non-negotiables, and reviews from members who already booked them.
Phriend takes no commission. The rate you see is what the guide keeps, and you pay it in cash in person: the guide asks for nothing, 25% or 50% when you meet, and the balance when the tour ends. Nothing is sent before you meet, on either side, which keeps money out of the app and out of reach of the usual scams.
What to agree on before you book
- The route and the stops, in the chat, so both sides have the record.
- What is included in the rate and what is not: transport, entrance fees, meals, boat.
- The meeting point, which is always a public place.
- What the guide asks for at the start, if anything, and that it is cash in person.
- How long, and the minimum booking if the service has one.
For locals who want to guide
If you know Cebu, speak English or another language, and enjoy people, you can list yourself in an afternoon. Verify your ID, write a profile with the tours you actually run and the rate you want, set the days you are free, and wait for the first booking request. Requests arrive in the app and by email; you accept or decline with one tap.
